My lap top will not start I keep getting the following message

Hard disk boot sector invalid
Press H to retry hard disk, any other key for next device

Has my hard drive died?

Any advice would be great

Do you have the XP CD? Try a repair install: click here

Have you got a OS cd or Recovery CD?

Try to get in to a command prompt and try "CHKDSK"
hopefully that will find the offending file and correct it.

If that doesn't do it, use FIXMBR in command prompt. That one tries to fix the master boot record which contains infomation about starting windows XP.

thanks I'll give it ago, at the moment its run through the repair phase and I'm currently looking at a blank screen with just the mouse pointer which works, the hard drive light is on all the time I have all the system recovery disks but I'm worried if the hard disk has failed that I may do more damage should I just reinstall windows?

Try this, without the space, obviously

If you reinstall windows from scratch you will lose everything on the Hard drive so this is a last resort.

Boot withe the XP CD and run recovery consul and try the chkdisk and fixmbr suggested above.

Using Recovery Consul

latest update I had the loading windows xp screen come up but then in went into a dos looking screen with boot device and asking me what to boot from if I select hard disk nothing happens

  legalrep 20:10 26 Feb 2006

tried to reinstall from cd but got the message "Error encountered while creating save to disk partition" followed by x:\tools\s2D>

Does this mean the hard drive is dead?
