It happens every so often but why?

I have a compaq presario 1639. Connected are finger print reader, my printer and a bluetooth dongle when I need it.

That's it. I'm on XP home. I have looked at all sorts of logs in control panel, admin. But I see nothing.

Look in Control Panel, Sounds and Audio devices, Sounds tab.

Play the sound 'Device Disconnect' - is that the sound you mean?

  SG Atlantis® 16:36 03 Jan 2006

yes that's the one.

...why it happens as in...why is there a sound played?

Or it is happening when you haven't disconnected anything?

  SG Atlantis® 17:11 03 Jan 2006

it happens every so often randomly.

The machine is functioning normally I might add except for playing this sound whenever it wants.

there are quite a lot of posts out there about this but not apparently much in the way of answers.

Are you using a powered usb hub of any sort?

Otherwise i'd be tempted to switch that particular sound off!

  SG Atlantis® 17:28 03 Jan 2006

it's not that big a deal, just wondering about it.

No I don't use any hubs. My keyboard, fingerprint reader and printer are connected straight into the back of the computer. My mouse is PS/2 connected. I plug the bluetooth dongle into the usb connection on the internal card reader at the front.

Any of them set for the computer to turn off to save power?

  SG Atlantis® 17:43 03 Jan 2006

nope.

printer stays on as does the fingerprint reader.

The screen on the printer goes into standby but the computer doesn't acknowledge this, according to windows the printer is online, which it is it's just the screen that's off.

Do you have your e-mail client set to collect messages every so often?

If a new e-mail(s) arrive the sound given out is very similar.

  SG Atlantis® 17:57 03 Jan 2006

it's outlook and no.

It's baffled me for ages and i know the different sounds, it's definately the hardware disconnect sound as above.

Even the missus asked "what's being disconnected?" when she heard it. The PC's in the living room.
