Keyboard problem in 98SE

I sold my old computer to a work colleague, I never had a problem with the keyboard. The £ sign has vanished and other keys have swapped round.
I know this is to do with American settings but it is set to British English in Regional Language.
In control panel/keyboard/language it will not let me set it to British English. It asks for the 98SE cdrom but then says it cannot find the file!
Can anyone help?

You might check you have the following lines in your start up files :-
In CONFIG.SYS
Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys
and in AUTOEXEC.BAT
keyb uk,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys

This should set you keyboard to the required state prior to windows loading. As in your case windows seems to be refusing to set it

Thanks for your help. I tried uninstalling the modem but that did not seem to make any difference. I am sure there must have been an esier way but I ended up upgrading her computer to XP.
