Keyboard not working

Using XP Home
The keyboard on my desktop has suddenly stopped working. In control panel the keyboard is showing but nothing happens when I try to get to the driver as the properties button isn't working either even though its not greyed out. I tried a new keyboard with nop luck. I've been into device manager and no keyboard is listed. I've tried to add hardware with no effect. I've restarted a few times but that doesn't help.
I tried a system restore but still no use. I thought about a XP Repair but with no keyboard I don't know how to get into the BIOS and get it to boot from the CD. I can't even get into Safe Mode. Any help would be much appreciated.

As if the connector for the keyboard may have a loose joint (solder repair requuired)

Can you get hold of a USB keyboard and try that?

First of all what type of keyboard?
USB, PS2 or wireless?

If PS2 the the onboard fus may be blown and there is nothing you can do except renew the motherboard or use a USB keyboard.

If USB then the BIOS may have reset and you need to reset the BIOS to enable USB legacy drivers (you will need a PS2 keyboard to do this.

If wireless via USB (as above) have checking batteries of course.
