Just bought 1gb ram

  Jimmyh 10:44 22 Feb 2006

My mobo has 3 slots and can total 3gb of ram.
I currently have 3 x 256mb modules and ive just bought a 1gb module.

Now do i put the 1gb in slot 1 and 2x256mb in slot 2 and 3, or the 1gb in slot 3 and the 2x256mb in slot 1 and 2?

It depends on the motherboard, check your manual if you have one. If not post back make and model of motherboard and someone will hopefully assist.

I always thought thast the largest amount of ram should go in the first slot. Can't remember where I read that.

I generally find that the higher capacity is best at slot 1.As an example: Did this yesterday with a new memory chip, and everything worked fine.

i got 2 slots, which is slot 1?

Largest capacity nearest cpu usually.
So slot one is usually the closest slot to the processor.

It should say on the mobo which is slot 1 and which is slot 2, some where about the memory modules u'll find some thing like "Slot1" and "Slot2"

I asked a question on this subject yesterday because I had just 256MB Ram and wanted to ADD a 512MB stick... I have just put it in the middle slot and it works fine..

I have heard some thing about running two modules the same type but cant remember what it was about.
