Java update memory issue

Looking at Add/Remove programmes in XP, I have noticed that Java and several updates take up large amounts of memory - can/should I remove all these and reinstall Java from scratch or would this cause any problems?

just keep the latest version. and run a registry cleaner afterwards as java always leaves a lot of broken registry links especially the update released earlier today.
