While running an AVG check, I noticed that it spent ages on Java. When I looked in Add/Remove programs, I noted the following entries:
J2SE Runtime Environment
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Could someone advise if I need to keep all three of these big files.

Delete them and install today's new update:

Thanks Stuartli and sunny staines. Will do.
Can you explain how this situation came about?

  Stuartli 18:55 16 Apr 2008

Probably because you didn't uninstall the current version when an update was released.

OK Stuartli, thanks again. I'll try to watch out for that in future!

It would be nice if Java implemented a sort of uninstall of old updates when you install the latest. Been hoping for that for years !

Sun say that you should keep older versions installed for applications that require that specific edition, none that I know of....

That sounds funny, coz what if the latest version you install is the only version you have on your pc. ? doesnt make sense, (Sun not you !)
