Much better to post your log onto the Hijack This forum

  beynac 16:13 12 Mar 2010

There's nothing bad showing. Are you having any problems other than the slowness?

  SJM_81 17:17 12 Mar 2010

Its just the speed. Ive just reformatted and its alot better.

PS does anyone know what i can disable in start up? i did the msconfig and went to start up but don't recognise any of the checked appliances?

Thanks

what RAM has she got ? ..... and then what O/S is she running on it .....

what anti virus are you using ?

these all will contribute to the speed of the PC ... the trick is to increase RAM ( easiest thing to upgrade bar changing the CPU ) .,... and to strip the computer to it's bones ... ie: only have the o/S running and a light weight anti-virus ( not nortons etc etc )

if you do all this and have wiped the files ( clutter ) by doing a format .... then your only other option would be to buy a new laptop ...

you could custom install the O/S ....but you would need to know what you are doing

The ram is very low. Infact, It only has 254 MB, but it still runs xp smoothly now that I have reformatted it. It's not too good at downloading two things at once tho.

It has empty ram slots and I can stick upto 2gig, so not worried about that.

I just want to boot it slightly faster as it as quite a few things on start menu. So I was wondering, what can I wipe off the start menu in msconfig?

  mfletch 19:27 12 Mar 2010

Try this

StartUpLite is a lightweight and simple to use application that allows you to speed up your system startup, click here

  patrick-1429172 19:34 12 Mar 2010

254mb of ram isn't good at all ..... the first thing i would do is increase that ..

secondly install a light weight anti-virus

the next thing i would ask is what is your sister using the laptop for ? ...

if it's only surfing the net ... DON'T install anything else on it ..just have firefox and windows

which then brings onto what operating system she is using .....

what processor is it using ?

but the bottom line is you need to increase the RAM

  SJM_81 19:41 12 Mar 2010

The laptop is running smooth surfing the web. It is as fast as mine and my laptop as 1g of ram.

My sister is talking about getting a new laptop as here daughter likes to play games.

I'm still gonna keep this lappy. The processor is only core. I just want this laptop to browse the web and it seems quite capable of that.

Why do people bang on about ram? This is quite sufficient to run xp as I'm experiencing now.

  patrick-1429172 21:59 12 Mar 2010

you have a CPU ( your mirco chip ie: intel etc ) which crunches calculations ... the RAM is there to aid those calculations made by the CPU ...
storing data for it to be used in opening programs and executing tasks etc etc .....

if you limit the number of RAM ...your PC will run slower , due to it taking more time to process requests

  rizlo29 22:05 12 Mar 2010

You don't need a lot of RAM to use XP. Even with a core processor, you ll be fine but wont be able to multitask much, which you mention when you say, you cant download two things at the same time.

Only lazy people need more than what that laptops capable of.

Just make sure you don't have multi tabs open and it will run as good as any pc on the planet.
