Would it be safe to wire a 12v light to a PC, using maybe a USB cable or would it burn out the PSU? I've looked over it, a 450W PSU and a 50w or less bulb. What do you think?
You dont want to know what i think lol,i wouldnt do it but thats me,as for is it safe i dunno,i dunno even if your USB port would power a 12v bulb let alone a 50watt one.
USB gives out 12v I checked, I'll check again on a different one. I could test it on an old PC.
Well my USB ports give 500mA per port,i dont know what that converts to in volts it may be 12v i have no clue.
USB might give out 12v but the amperage is miniscule, so if you connect a lamp to it you will probably wreck the USB ports and possibly the motherboard with it.
no it doesnt - it gives out 5v
And I might even put it on a HDD/Optical Drive power lead.
I think you should buy a torch and leave the pc alone, you may end up breaking the whole lot for an experiment.
I forgot to say that the amperage drawn from a 12v/50w is 4.33amps so no way will it work.
Try the tech support link at:click hereAn alternative might be the small light fittings available for laptops that run off a USB port. See:click hereclick here
Is it safe...?NO!
