Is it at all possilbe to connect a cross-over cable directly between a computer and a network printer, providing the computer has relevant drivers, and use the printer in this way, or do network printers require a log-on of some sort?

I agree with ßéŁâ - why would you want to? Why not use the standard local USB or parallel port.

Because i have a free network cable and a free network socket on the computer, whereas i dont have free USB and there is no parallel connection. I was just wondering if it would communicate properly to the computer over a corssover cable

Well I suppose you could always try it - it not a thing that would normally be done, so probably unlikely that someone can tell you - but you can wait and see. Or you can get an inexpensive USB card, and save a lot of (potential) grief.
