Is it possible to connect a normal dvd r/w

To my laptop with normal connections (not USB)? Can I take out the internal standard CD-rom drive and have the burner connected, but sitting outside of the laptop? I hope this makes sense!

whats the reasoning behind, not usb/or replacing with internal?

I meant for a quick solution. It would be at least another week before i could buy a usb adaptor.

Not with out an adaptor of some sort.

To run an external drive you will need a 5/12v power supply and a ribbon adaptor.
I dout you could easily get the adaptor cable on the connection inside the laptop anyway.
