ISP address in use by someone else do i worry???

I am registered with a poker site and when trying to enter a tournament was refused because someone was already registered with my IP address. I knew it wasnt possible from my pc/home address so agreed with the agent that the safest thing to do was to withdraw my funds (its not a lot about 40 dollars) just in case. They then asked me to send them copies of i)picture id ii)front and back of credit card, iii)utility bill. I refused on the basis if my ISP address was being "ambushed" it wasnt the best idea.
Anyone heard of this happening before and in simple terms tell me how it can happen and what if anything I should do.
I am not that tech minded so may be scared about something trivial. Hope you can help

A definite scam going on here - in no circumstances send any of the info you have been asked for!!

I would run all your anti-everything programs as a precaution.

Also if you wish to continue with the poker site, I would close everything within that site and start a new Identity for yourself, new password etc.

Thanks for your reply. Not that bothered about continuing and for "security" the site doesnt allow id changes. Its just that I dont like just leaving them the 40 dollars, however if my ISP address is being hijacked in some way it may be the cheaper option! Do you know (in terms I might grasp) how the address can be stolen?

Hmm, I reckon your best just taking the cheapest option. How the address can be stolen is not a question I can answer, however, if guys can hack into the Pentagon, I guess anything is possible - I am afraid I am not that computer literate, if I was I would probably be rich by now - which I 'aint!!

I think you have probably got off lightly. As a further precaution, I would advise changing your Passwords and any other Security systems you may already have in place.

BTW - by ISP address, I assume you mean your email address - so it would be a good idea to get yourself a new email address, 'tis easy enough to let all your genuine contacts know your new email address. Better safe than sorry!

Maybe if you keep your bank details on your computer it may be time to run a thorough scan using all you Security programs. Is it possible that you have been playing Poker at a friends or relatives house and they know your details to get into the Poker site.My son uses my poker site now and again but I have no problem with that as he has my permission.Either someone has hacked into your site.A friend or relation may be using it.Or you are getting redirected to a rogue site.Maybe turn on the Phishing Filter if using IE7.

I believe u mean a IP address IE 09.224.182.11 this is the address ur computer uses when accessing the internet to identify it's self and most computers use windows to request a IP address from the ISP.

as for how it was taken and used by someone else, an ISP rents out the IP address to a computer for a set ammount of time and is liable to change at time's (given what i've read anyway) over then that a hacker or scam site would have to get you in some way to enter a web site and enter ur details as at the same time most servers verify a computer IP address to insure its safe. so i'm gessing that a rouge could use that process to get ur ip address (again taken from what i've read) maby the FE know's more???

Kalignorgna Thankyou.
This may sound really stupid, but that number string you quoted is different from the one I use to reconnect when my internet goes down. The number I use was given to me some months ago by Cytanet , my service provider for when I get disconnected. Are we talking about the same thing?. In which case could cytanet have changed it without telling me and perhaps I am using someone elses. As for the previous post, I havent played anywhere else but at home and theres only me ever played so no family members have my details.
In addition I have recntly been bombarded with junk email, (for Viagra and related products),could this be connected.
Are you able to change your IP address and how do you do it and would you change your email also.
Have checked my scan history nothing untoward there, I use AVG. Thanks for helping me.
