IRQ - Will this work/Is it safe/Any other way?

My Sony VAIO XP laptop has 10 devices on IRQ 9 - I'm told this is excessive and may be the cause of some sound problems. There are no BIOS updates.

I've heard that if you change the Plug and play OS installed in the BIOS to "No", reboot several times, then change BIOS setting back to "yes", it will sort out the problem.

Will it sort it out? Is it safe to try it? Any other suggestions?

Look forward to some help

I don't know about XP but in Windows 98 you allow the OS to choose IRQs automatically.

A suggestion, although I have no experience of laptops..Micro soft Knowldge base article 182628 which I have used successfully...go to Device Manager,,System devices..dble click PCI Bus and then click to clear 'Use IRQ steering' then click Yes then Yes again and click to restart
A dodge used by OEMs even on new Pcs......sorted out my problems with mis-routed sound cards and modems

Sorry ...my response concerned 98SE and I see you refer to Sony XP...don't know if XP uses 'IRQ steering' probably not
