OK. So I tried enabling the Guest account as suggested by Howard63 in my earlier thread click here but this only worked for a short time. Now once again I am having the same problem.

If I go into My Network Places, I can see the desktop computer under the workgroup, but when I try to access it, I get the following message:

desktop name> is not accessible. You might not have permission.... Contact the administrator....to find out if you have permissions.

Well, I'm the network administrator and I thought I had given all the proper permissions, but I'm still a novice at this so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

try disabling the firewall on each PC in turn and see if it will connect.

Thanks Fruitbat,

I did start by looking at the firewalls. The desktop has Sygate, plus the router firewall and both were set to allow access. But I hadn't realised that the Windows firewall was also switched on (I'm sure I had this one switched off. Does it switch on automatically after an auto update or something??)

So far so good. I'll leave this open for a couple of days, just in case.
