Internet Lockup

Can anyone help please with the following problem that has recently occured?

I can log on to the internet from IE, firefox or Outlook Express OK. But as soon as I request a web page, or Outlook tries to get messages, the computer locks up and can only be cleared by pressing the reset button.

The connection works fine from my laptop computer so it is something happening with the Desktop computer.

I have tried turning off the Firewall but that made no difference.

I am not a computer novice but this problem has me beat at the moment so any sensible suggestions would be very welcome.

If you are using a router switch of its power, wait ten seconds then reconnect power. Or double check all cable connections inside and outside desktop pc.
Also check video/graphics card is seated properly, the same with memory sticks.
