Internet Explorer "Script Error"

My mother has an old-ish computer, running Windows 98 and on a dial-up connection, which she only ever uses for emailing.

When I opened Internet Explorer, I got - on very many of the webpages I opened - one, or often a series, of popup notices headed "Script Error", with a brief explanation that there was a problem on the page and a choice of two buttons - Yes or No - whether to continue without activating the script.

Sometimes I could continue (with typeface or other elements of the webpage displaying oddly). Other pages simply hung, or failed to load fully.

What's the problem, and more important, what's the cure?

In Internet Explorer Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab. Untick 'Display a notification about every script error' and tick 'Disable script debugging'.
