My sister rang me earlier with a PC problem.

It looks like a trojan/virus which is not allowing her to open various sites and redirects her to ad/porn sites!

It all started when she noticed that AVG was showing as requiring an update. It is set to update automatically but tried to manually update and was redirected to various sites, nothing to do with AVG.Googled for AVG and even the links for Grisoft are redirecting.

Scanned with AVG but it found nothing suspicious.

Cannot download any Spyware scanners or use an online scanner, just get this problem of being redirected!

It's maddening - any help would be appreciated

you may need hijack this to find it. I have not used it but others may have info.

you could download it on another pc and copy it to a disc.

Ask her to search for a file called hosts - no extension - she may need to set explorer to view hidden files.

Then rename it to hostsold and reboot. See if that helps.

The hosts file is the one that directs the operating system to various sites. Many malware products tend to change it. When rebooted she may be able to get to do an online scan.
