Internet Explorer Error

I turned on my Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop today for the first time in a few months, and found that there were quiet a few updates waiting for me,(16 in fact)! I let Windows update itself automatically as recommended, but after the normal reboot I could not access the Internet. I received a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error message that said:
"Runtime error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe
This program has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information". I chose to do a system restore and all went well initially, and I could access the Internet again. I then created a restore point at this time. However, after allowing the updates to download again the same thing happened. This time going to the previously created "good" restore point did not help, I still could not access the Internet. Can anybody help please?
