My pc frequently reports that i e encountered a serious problem and needs to shut down. Occassionally I have also been presented with a blue screen saying 'beginning memory dump....' followed by a shutdown and restart or sometimes just a shutdown. Is there something I can do or is it time for a new pc ? The current machine runs XP home, SP2 and is about 6 / 7 years old.
Thanks in advance.

6/7 years is quite old for a PC. Having said that it depends what you use it for, Email and internet don't require a powerful pc. You could try a fresh install of XP, wipe HDD and boot from CD should solve any problems. If you have the money though, go on, spoil yourself...they don't 'arf come cheap these days. #;-)

Make sure your air vents at the back of the computer are free from dust or fluff,If it is the inside would probably be the same and would also need cleaning.

I would backup all important data. Your hard drive maybe on its way out.
