Internet connection in WindowsXP Pro

Using the connection wizard I can get as far as the point where the choice should be
a) Connect using a dial up modem
b) Connect using a browdband .......
c) Connect using a broadband connection that is always on
a) and b) are "greyed out" BUT I do not have broadband, and want to connect via a 56k modem to an ISP.
How do I get rid of the "apparent" broadband.
There are no Internet connections shown in Network Connections
