Internet connection speed fluctuating - HELP!!

HI, over the last few days my internet connection has been slowing down and then speeding up again.

NTL cable broadband connection of 4meg.
Win XP Home / IE6

Originally the cable modem was connected via a D-Link router by cable. On NTL advice I removed the router and network cables. Now it is on USB cable connection.

I have done a clean re-install of windows, including SP2 and any updates that are current.

The speed fluctuates minute by minute from 3.6 meg at best to 0.16 meg at worst with no apparent reason. The only things running on the pc are windows, Broadband medic, NTL Netguard.

Any Ideas ???

would suggest putting your old equipment back..you can use any modem or router to connect... but isp's like you to have one that there tech support are familiar with... and a router is better than a usb modem any day..kind regards akanic

The problem extsts with or without the router/netword connection.

The modem is the NTL supplied one.

A teenager with an X-Box, with on-line gaming, would do something like that to your connection

No, just this pc.

It just seems as if something is using the connection sometimes that cant be seen.

As I have done a full reinstall of windows, I cant work out what it can be.

Nothing is found by anti-virus or anti-spyware

I would have said to suspect a Contention Issue

However I don't think that this should be a problem if your connection is through the NTL Cable.

NTL technician came today - Modem was defective.

He replaced it with a new one and also reduced the capacity or something

So far it works like a dream.................
