Internal modem problem

I have an HSP56MR modem on a PCChips motherboard. The opereating system is Windows XP Professional. Whenan application tries to comnnect with the internet, usually during installation for registration or update etc, and no connection is present, the modem locks up and I can not dial out. A reboot does not clear the problem and modem diagnostics report everything in order. The only wat to clear the problem which I have been able to find is to phisically remove the modem, reboot the comuter, shut down and reinstall the modem. I have a feeling that this is a software problem and would appreciate hearing from anyone who has encountered this and has an answer.

A Google search throws up a few links for driver updates - that's the first thing to try.

Have you checked the Bios to ensure that the riser modem is Enabled?

Everything checked. Drivers up to date.
This problem only occurs when an application tries to connect to a web page, usually diring installation of an application, and no dial up conect is present. Otherwise modem works fine.
