Intermittent shutdown

  Malapoa 19:13 28 Aug 2006

My PC has developed a habit of shutting down and then immediately restarting in secure mode and a few operations later reversing the process. Yesterday ,when surfing the net it had a "fit" and began shutting down and restarting in secure mode and normal mode at five second intervals. I restarted my computer by closing all programees and using "Start" "Restart" and the problem cured itself. Today there has been no recurrence. I use Windows XP have Windows Defender, and Norton Anti-Virus,both with automatic updates. My question is "Am I on the brink of disaster?"

The symptoms are that of a virus, possibly the sasser one from your description. there are some sasser removal tools, do a google search...

What to do?

Update Norton;
Turn off system restore;
Run the norton scan;
Turn system restore back on.

Now monitor the situation.

Reason for turning off system retore is that a virus can often 'hide' here.

Post back if it fails
