Installing XP Pro key upgrade tool

Hi gang, back for some more advice,
At present, puter is running XP Pro, but have found that Microsoft wont allow validation for various reasons! I have taken up the MS very kind offer to buy a "Genuine" version. It would appear that although there is a downloadable " Key Update Tool", when I have run this it shows an error at the end, claiming that the internet connection cannot be found and error (0x80004005)is displayed. I have re-downloaded the software and run direct from the MS website, have tried disabling ZoneAlarm Pro and Mcafee 8.0, in the vague hope that one of these might have been blocking the internet. Still no joy.
Have contacted MS Technical helpdesk, who were unable to offer any suggestions apart from waiting for the "Genuine" disk to arrive and to carry out a total new install. Actual question, is there any other way around this? Sorry the pre-amble was rather lengthy.
