Installing a USB Hub

  doriena 11:54 04 May 2003

I am trying to fit a 4 port mini USB hub on my machine, plugging it in to one of the two existing ports. When I restart it gets as far as "updating hardware configuration database" and freezes. Any suggestions please?

has the usb hub got it's own power supply? or does it use the pc power.?

also check if you have via chipsets and if so download latest 4 in 1 via chipset drivers.

Do not know if this will put any light as to your problem, but it is worth considering.I had a similar event, and it was found that a 'power-alimentation' fault was evident. Not enough power via the existing USB connection.I obtained a self powered hub, and all as been okay since.

No Gerrycan, it does not have it's own power supply so I suppose that may be the problem.
How do I check for via chipsets?

device manager/scroll down to (universal serial bus controlers) left click on the "+" next to it and it will show you if there are any "VIA" there

thanks Gerrycan
All I have in the device manager are
Intel 823671AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
USB Mass Storage Device and
USB Root Hub

Thanks rev.bem. Having deleted all the zero byte oem.*inf files as explained in the article you referred me to, the USB hub has installed correctly.
