Brother wants to install SP2 but doesnt want soem of the things included in firewall and software relating to media player.

Is there any way of picking what you want to install from SP2?

the fire wall can be turned off and if you dont want meadia player install an alternative as far as i know there is no option for selective install of sp2

SP2 was originally released in August 2004 with the intention of helping to improve the security aspects of systems used by those who couldn't - or wouldn't - pay much attention to such matters.

Hence the basic firewall and more AV support.

As Devil Fish points out you don't have to use WMP and it's easy to nominate another media player as the default.
