installing old P4 processor on new MB

I dont think there should be a problem but thought it best to ask those in the know first. I have an old comp with P4 processor and was wondering if it would be okay to install this on a new motherboard, (possibly a Gigabyte with intel i865 chipset-I think thats the one will check later.) Reason is, I want to piece together a newish comp for the kids so that they can run their games but also want to use up some of the parts from my old comp. ie, P4 processor, 80gb HDD, CDRW drive, floppy etc.
I cant use the current motherboard as it has RIMM and is a pain in the arse to find and expensive. Is it difficult to remove a processor, are they stuck on or should it just lift out easy enough.

the mobo manual says that cpu socket is 423. are these sockets readily available on new motherboards.
