Being fairly new to this game of upgrading hardware am I right in assuming that if there is no spare 5.25 bay the exisiting CD rewriter will have to come out if I want to install a DVD writer?

If there is no other bay then yes.

But your DVD rewriter should also be able to write to CD-R and CD-RW media.

Or get an external one.

if you only have one bay and it is being used then i would go for external, for ease of copying.if i wasnt going to copy much go for internal,i have not come across a pc with one bay have you got usb,or usb 2?if not then your choice is limited
