Check that the SATA ports are enabled in BIOS.

Check that the cables and power cable are plugged in.

Does the BIOS see the DVD?

Are you using SP2 on the XP?

Can you hear the DVD spinning up when you power on the PC?

Thinking about it you may need a driver for the SATA. That seems like quite an old motherboard. If drivers are required they should have come with the mobo. Check on the websitre for up to date drivers

I rebuilt a system using the exact board you have.

Please post back answers to the above questions from Mikeben21.

Have you run the mobo driver and utilities disc ? will need to run this !

i have installed the utilities on the cd that came with the board but nothing that mentioned SATA the bios does not recognise sata on either sata 1 or sata 2 just cant figure this out and cannot find any drivers on the website just. totally confused.
running XP home SP2
done what i think is right seem lost now

You need to install RAID drivers from the disc, these contain the stat drivers.

Have you connected the power cable ? sorry seems silly but does happen.

What does Disc Management say ? is it recognised there,i doubt it if not recognised in the bios.

Have you swapped the sata cable for a known working one ?

Is this a new dvd drive or old one....can you confirm it works ok ?

I can see your point as the drive should be recognised as there is no master or slave on sata's.

Just a thought here;

Instead of using the dedicated sata power connector,if you have a spare molex from the psu...use this.

i dont seem to be able to find these on the disc are they named something else?????

forgive my ignorance here,but why would stevediggo need raid drivers for a dvdrw drive ?

From the manual and may have relevance;

OnBoard IDE Operate Mode
Please select [Compatible Mode] when you install legacy OS (Windows
ME / 98SE) into SATA device. If you install legacy OS into IDE HDD while
SATA devices are used, you also need to select [Compatible Mode].
If native OS (Windows 2000 / XP) is installed into SATA device, please
select [Enhanced Mode]. You also need to select [Enhanced Mode]
while native OS is installed into IDE HDD and SATA devices are used.
If you do not install any SATA device, please also select [Enhanced Mode]
no matter you use legacy OS or native OS for the system.
Please note that the following options will be varied depending on the
“OnBoard IDE Operate Mode” ([Compatible Mode] or [Enhanced
Mode]) that you selected.
When [Enhanced Mode] is selected:
OnBoard IDE Controller
You may enable either the primary IDE channel or the secondary IDE channel.
Or you may enable both the primary and the secondary IDE channels by
selecting [Both]. Set to [Disabled] will disable the both. Configuration options:
[Disabled], [Primary], [Secondary], [Both].
When [Compatible Mode] is selected
Combined Mode Option
It allows you to select between [Pri IDE + SATA] and [SATA + Sec IDE]. If
it is set to [Pri IDE + SATA], then the secondary IDE will not work. Likewise,
if it is set to [SATA + Sec IDE], then the primary IDE will not work.

Try this;

HDD as master on ide 1
DVD rom as slave on the middle connector of ide 1

Now try the sata dvdrw

The sata drive will be seen as master.

In theory this should work without problems.

Should read;

DVD rom as slave on the middle connector of the ribbon cable to ide 1.
