Install XP on a win 98 computer

  royboxer 10:02 26 May 2005

I am trying to install XP on a PB computer that was running on 98. It appears an old version of XP is already installed on the pc. When I try and install the new OS it tells me another version already exists. How do I remove the older version or overcome this problem?

You should format the system as this will create a "clean install" of windows, thus there shouldn't be any problems with old registry entries, hardware not responding because windows can't find the driver (and wont allow you to re-install sometimes, trust me, it happenned to me... :-( )

You will need to edit the bios to "boot" as follows:

first: CD-ROM

second: Floppy Disk

third: Hard-Drive

Then just save the changes and insert the WinXP installation disk and look out for the "Press any key to boot from cd" message in the bios... Press a key and then follow the on-screen instructions to format and install windows xp

Have a look here click here.

To go into my bios I have to press <F2> key during startup, then navigate to BOOT, it's in this section (Boot Device Priorty),that I alter the boot sequince.

Hope this helps.

The most common keys to enter the BIOS are del or F2

As the pc boots up you might see a message which states press ... for setup.
