Install W XP on external drive

I have a large external drive which I have partitioned in two.

I want to use this drive as an emergency boot up in case the C drive fails.

Can I simply install W XP on it?

I have P Magic 8 which gives the facility to install an OS on another partition, but it does not recognise an external drive for this purpose.

If you use Acronis to back up your C drive onto the 2nd drive, you will be able to restore to a replacement C drive. Consider keeping ALL your data on the 2nd drive.

How old is the PC?

Only very modern PCs (and not that many) allow booting from USB, you will need to check in the BIOS if your PC supports boot from USB.
