When I instal a new program, why do some require a restart?

I always thought it was to do with writing registry entries. Good question - we will see.

To ensure that all the settings etc which need to be saved are recorded correctly in the Registry.

I always re start, even if not asked to. Ditto, when removing somthing. I does no harm, and is a belt and braces answer. It has always served me well.

Thanks. Just had to reinstal XP, and to download AVG etc., and then close down the internet to instal, and then restart and go after the next one ...

When you install a new program you are putting new settings and info into the registry. It is important for the computer to read these settings in the registry before the program can run properly. It is therefore necessary to reboot to allow windows to read them and do what it needs to do for the program to run.

That makes sense, thanks.
