When I place the following "1/2" (without the quote marks)into a cell using Excel 2007,it changes to the date when I move to another cell. How can I stop it doing this.
Thanks in advance.

I would use 'Insert', 'Symbol' then select ½

Or put a ' in front of it. This denotes that it is text.

Or format the cell as Text before entering the value.

Thank you.

I use Alt codes for 1/4 and halfs.

Alt 0188 = 1/4
Alt 0189 = 1/2
Alt 0190 = 3/4

This is OK for these fractions but if you require 3/8 then you have to use as above.
