Infra red on laptop

Please excuse this what may seem an elementary question to some. My second hand laptop has a infra red port. Do I understand correctly that if I purchase a USB infra red dongle or adaptor device for my main computer that I will be able to communicate between them. What will be any limitations?

need to be in line of sight and not to far apart approx 1 metre.

Fruit Bat /\0/\... Ummmm, thats not too hot is it, a metre!!! Is that the only limitation, What about accessing, say, the internet. I'm on broadband with my main one, the portable is not connected...yet.

had IR on an old HP laptop best results at a metre drop outs futher out. never tried to network through IR or share access but used mobile and IR to connect to web.
