Everytime I seem to install a program I seem to get the error box. The instruction at "0x771c741a" refernced memory at "0x00163ec0". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program.

What does this error mean and is there any way to solve it.

You may have a problem with your memory
Go to this link to test it and follow the links through.

Its not necessarily faulty memory. This problem is usually caused by a buffer overflow due to having a file extension that exceeds 260 characters to the right of the period.

Microsoft have issued a fix click here;en-us;q267858

However, I run WinXP service pack 1 and still get the error sometimes during an install.

I just click OK to terminate program and usually everything is fine.

Okay Microsoft link not working will try again:

If that doesn't work, then click here

and add

default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q267858

after the .com/ in the address bar and then click go

Otherwise it is Microsoft Knowledge Base Article number 267858 - so click here
and then in the search box at the top left of the page click on show options and type 267858 in the For solutions containing... box and it is the first solution listed.
