IE7 redirecting to default browser

Opera is my default browser. I use IE for Windows/Office Update. Since installing IE7, when I click on a link, e.g.more detail or, even, Office Update, it opens a new window in Opera. Previously, IE always went to IE. I've checked Tools/Internet options/... and can't see anything wrong. Thought I'd ask for advice before removing IE7 and seeing if IE6 is better, i.e. old behaviour. Any ideas?

Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Programs and enable the option:
"Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser"
Close IE and open again. Click YES if you are prompted to set it as default browser.

What are the side effects of this change and why is it necessary? I've not had this problem with earlier versions, going back to IE5, 5.5 & 6.

It will make IE7 your default browser, which I thought was what you wanted.

I just want IE7 to direct fromits own embedded URLs to another Window/tab in IE, as it has always done. Opera should remain as my default browser, as it has been for many years. Never before has IE noticed the existence of Opera, or any other browser. Is this a feature of IE7?
