IE 7 Favourites

I have a large "Favourites" list mostly in connection with Family History - several county and 'useful' sites. IE 7 (which I don't remember deliberately installing) often puts a double arrow at the bottom and says - something like - sites which have not been visited for some time. To turn off this option visit Tools; Int Options; History. I then have to go all through the list clicking on the greyed-out ones.
I HAVE used these sites mostly weekly. Following their instructions I have set my browsing History to full recommended storage and 365 days length of time to keep them - and it still does it. What am I doing wrong? I am afraid of losing something important.

Maybe Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Enable Personalised Favorites Menu?
