Hi what is the difference between the 80 and 40 flat IDE cables?
I was about to change IDE cables in my PC as it is giving problems but they are all 80wire for the CDs and the HD is it ok to change them to the 40 wire.

80 `wire` cables are for UDMA66/100, the extra wires are to suppress interference which could disrupt the info at the higher transfer speeds. they're interchangeable; depending on the age of the mobo it might drop the ide devices back to udma33 when a 40 pin cable is used automatically, if not you'll need to set the correct speeds and modes yourself

As a general rule use IDE 80 wire cables for hardrives and 40 wire cables for DVD/CD drives.
If you use the 80 wire ones on everything you won't go wrong.
