I need to edit the registry - help...

  andy@ 22:32 17 May 2009

I need to edit the registry to get the 'local security policy' dB working in XP SP2 - to fix an apparent installshield bug...

will run this... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0

How can I backup the necessary so I can restore if needed?

Any other advice?

Start - run - type regedit - press ok

File - export - save registry with a name you can remember.

Thanks this exports a single file. How would I restore the registry if needed. Actually I guess since the 'fix' sets security to zero I will probably want to do this. Would system restore (in control panel) reset this registry change..?

"Would system restore (in control panel) reset this registry change..?"

Yes, create a restore point just prior to the edit you propose making, make sure to give the restore point a meaningful name.

Thanks done this.

Turns out re. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0 these files are already set zero.

Were can I download SP3 to try this as a fix for the installshield bug?

Actually found another option...

"1.. Attempt to recover it by running esentutl /r on the %windir%\Security folder.
If this fails, attempt to repair it by running with esentutl /p on
2.. After that, delete the log files
in %windir%\Security."

How exactly do I run.... esentutl /p on
%windir%\Security\Database\Secedit.sdb. ?

Direct download link for XP SP3 at click here

Please don't be put off by the long name, this is the genuine item, be warned though it is quite a large download, 300+ MB from memory.

There is a shorter download somewhere on the Microsoft website.
Also sometimes you can get "Access denied" errors for SP3 updating. Common problem, it is fixable with a bit of Googling. MS Knowledge searching.

To backup the Registry. Start/Run/Regedit
Then select export, from top folder.
Single click it to get the focus.

Other free programs can also do this better than I have explained.

"There is a shorter download somewhere on the Microsoft website."

I take it you are referring to the link which does an 'online update' to SP3, if so it may be a smaller download but I doubt it will be much smaller, it will depend on what, if any, windows updates have been downloaded and installed.

kk appreciate that. Think it was 60MB but it's in and it works. And I pulled my hair out cos it crashed. And so did the 300MB version.
But finally managed it.
I thought computer's were supposed to make our lives easier lol.

Well SP3 is installed and working fine.

BUT installshield is still interrupting and Silkypix developer suite is still not installing... :-((

When I click on "Local Security Policy" (for that possible fix) it's still giving me 'Group Security Policy could not be determined etc etc'
