hyperactive mouse

  palinka 18:19 26 Nov 2007

Working on a friend's laptop today I found that his mouse is very hard to control. Even when my hand was nowhere near it the pointer was skittering around. I know how to change the sensitivity of the mouse for clicking, etc; but how can we stop the hyperactivity? My friend has returned to using the touchpad as that is more under his control.

is it an optical mouse?

has your friend recently changed their desk or mousemat. I find that some optical mice have a real problem on shiny surfaces and tend to skitter all over the place.

Yes, this problem drove me mad for weeks!

I uninstalled and reinstalled my mouse drivers numerous times, changed my mouse, changed my USB cable, then actually thought about reinstalling XP!

Light shiny mouse mat was the problem with my optical mouse.

axelbrora's suggestion may do the trick. It is indeed an optical mouse on a shiny and light mouse mat. I'll go round tomorrow with a spare mat that I have that isn't shiny or light and see if that cures it.
Thanks everyone.

I always use a piece of plain paper as a mouse mat. Doubles up as a doodle pad and you throw it away when tatty or full of scribbling.
