I have a deskjet 940c which I tried to connect to my wife's vista laptop.

After going onto hp official driver site it was apparent there was no vista usb driver, although vista comes with hp940c print driver which is not usb. The fact that there is no parallel port connection (I think that's what it's called) on the laptop means we can't use the printer via her laptop. It's therefore connected to the xp desktop and works fine on xp usb driver.

All this, unless someone can advise differently?

Marko797 according to HP the 940c driver is built into Vista so its meant to install automatically click here& click here

According to HP the 840c is the same. I would do what the others have suggested clean out all printers and reinstall from scratch.

I have found the HP (hp.com)web site very useful for sorting problems. you can even have a on line chat if needed. You just need to look at all the various options, and I am sure you will resolve your problems

I stand corrected!
However, when I did plug in the printer on usb (a while ago) it did recognise the printer if I recall correclty, but wouldn't print at all. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
Thnx for putting me right.

it worked. Tried via the network but unsuccessful on this. Error 0x000006be. Don't want to hijack the thread so will leave it there. Thnx again TB...I just need another lead now into the printer.

I have to point one thing out. At the bottom of the page on the HP website it mentions that some specialist things might not work. Now for me and my Epson 680 what that meant was the printer would run perfectly and print fine but the program that kept track of how much ink you had left didn't work and wouldn't work under Vista.
Only reason I mention this is HP might be the same in that you might find some bits don't work.
Which is bloody annoying I might add.
