Have a monitor just gone pop !
are there any engineers out there who can advise
if there is anything obvious I should look for
if taking cover off ?

I'm not an engineer but my advice is do not take the cover off. Monitors hold a large electric charge and you could have a nasty accident.

No there is nothing obvious to look for - and even if you did see something, the chances you could get the spare and repair it are remote in the extreme.

The warning about taking off the cover is a very serious one - do not do it unless you are a trained TV/monitor engineer - there can be VERY nasty high voltages stored in components.

Monitors that have expired with noises are almost never worth repairing - if it's less than three years old, it may still be inder warranty.
