HP laptop sees network but wont connect

  Halmer 15:36 23 Jun 2008

My friend's laptop works fine through a modem at her home but she can't get it to work wirelessly or via the ethernet through her new router.

I've tried to connect to my own home wireless network for elimination purposes. It sees the network but when I press connect it says 'Windows cannot connect to.....'

Any ideas please?

WPA or WEP settings. You usually need the SSID and password to connect to a wireless network. There may also be MAC address filtering to look at.

You also need to set it to "Never dial a connection" in the connection properties of your web browser.

Go into the router setup page and get the Encryption Ket and SSID as above. these are then loaded into the Laptop Software when you try to connect

It doesn't even get that far.

I try to connect but instead of bringing the window up that asks for the key it gives me the Windows unable to connect message.

I haven't got MAC filtering running either.

Have you got the key from the router???

Yes I set it up (a ten digit number) (my laptop works OK wirelessly off it so I know it works OK) but the one I'm trying to repair doesn't get that far.

Access is denied

Run the Network setup wizard. It will configure the firewall etc

Or cheat and use Network Magic! click here

Are you using a Built in Wireless card or a Dongle etc
