HP Compaq PC not booting up

  Halmer 19:45 01 Dec 2009

My XP PC failed to boot up yesterday. I need access to the HD fairly urgently as my lad's homework is imminent and the latest back up that I did does not include his work.

When it boots I get a F10 option for system recovery but believe that this will format the drive and his work will be lost. The screen then goes black and stops.

I have: -

1. A Compaq recovery CD that I did when I bought the PC a few years back and

2. A Nero bootable disc that I haven't got a clue what to do with.

Other than take it to PC World is there anything else that I can do please given the tools that I have?

Thanks in anticipation.

As you are using another computer What about taking the drive out and fit it in that to get Doc's and files off before anything else

Boot Menu (Esc)
Set Up F1
System Recovery F10

I'm on my lad's laptop at the moment.

You could get a Caddy to fit the drive in then plug it into USB

You would need to know size and type of Drive before buying a Caddy IDE or SATA

Looks like its failing to read the boot sector of the hard drive which is not good news for recovering data from it.

Yo can download the six boot floppies from MS at click here

Boot into recovery console and at the C: prompt type fixmbr and press ok then type exit remove the disk and attempt to reboot from your hard drive.

Or possibly this tool can help click here

How do I boot into 'recovery console' please given that I only get the three options above?

Thanks for all responses.

Will pick up on this tomorrow.
