HP Compaq Notebook NX 9005 not starting up

  jules52 16:06 01 Jan 2006

Whether trying on mains or battery notebook will not switch on even though power lights are on. Have removed battery (tested this and is fully charged) and tried to start on mains only and power light comes on. Have probably worked out that the battery and mains ac are both ok. I think the problem is probably more serious and would appreciate any ideas.

Could the laptop be in Hibernate? Try holding the power button for 10 seconds and then releasing it.

Option 2 - The LCD screen. Does it show any sign of life? It could be that the Inverter has gone or the backlight. Try using an external monitor.

Taff thanks a lot. Have tried a monitor and it works fine. The LCD screen is very very dark and I think your spot on with your diagnosis. The thing is do you think it would need a complete new screen and if it did would it be a cost effective repair?

I`ve been through this with a Compaq Evo N1015V - It`s a sentimental journey with the accent on the mental! I had the Inverter replaced at a cost of £100 and now I think the backlight has gone. (I`m using a spare laptop at the moment and the Compaq uses a spare monitor) I would think very carefully about it and certainly get a quote or two. Where abouts in the UK are you? I`m in the Midlands and there are one or two dealers who specialise in this sort of thing but as with all laptops many of the parts are quite expensive and labour costs are very high.

Are you sure that the LCD screen has not just been disabled. With the monitor on there is a Function key combination that toggles between LCD/Monitor or Both - on my laptop it`s the Fn Key + F4. Try it and see if there`s a difference to the LCD screen as you do it.

I`m guessing your laptop is about three years old? You can locate parts quite easily and if you`re brave enough and have a few tools you could attempt a repair yourself. I`ve had mine to bits several times now - fiddly but if you have the patience .....

click here for the Service Manual. Check out page 103 - there are a few things to check first. Fn+F5 seems to be your key combination for toggling displays. Then check that the memory modules are secure. click here Check the LCD brightness is fully on (Another Fn key combination)There are a few other things to work through but ultimately a diagnosis by a professional may be required.

Thanks very much for your advice. The laptop actually belongs to my son who is home from uni and is returning in a couple of days. My main concern was retrieving all his data that wasn't backed up. But that problem is now solved and I can lend him my Dell laptop to survive. I've been trawling the net trying to decide my next move. The machine is exactly 27 months old with just a 12 month warranty from HP which I find a bit odd when most manufacturers are giving 3 years. I have emailed them making this point and am awaiting their reply but not holding my breath. Although I am quite okay delving around inside a desktop I'm not too sure about an lcd repair but hey ho I'll download the service manual you suggested and keep you advised. Once again thanks very much for all your help it is much appreciated.

27 months is a bit soon for a screen to go but I suppose it has had a fair bit of use by your son so it`s perhaps not unusual. You didn`t tell me in which part of the country you live. I may be able to recommend a repair specialist in Lancashire or the Midlands.

I live near Watford in Herts and after contacting HP who quoted me around £450 for a complete top unit replacement (ridiculous when the laptop only cost £707 and the equivalent spec Dell can now be purchased for around £500). I have contacted a company in Liverpool who have quoted £100 +vat including coll/delivery. If I don't want them to repair they will return to me for just £12. I'll let you know the outcome in due course.
