I want to transfer the contents of the hard drive of an old PC to my new one. Is an USB connection enough or is it more complicated?

You can not transfer programs only data (music photos docs etc).

You could put the hard drive into a usb enclosure and transfer the data.

what type of drive laptop 2.5" or desktop 3.5" sata or IDE connection (IDE for olde PCs 7yrs old or more wide cable).

or you can connect both machines to a router and network them together and trans fer file that way.

You can also use USB with Windows Easy Transfer, but you have to buy a special cable. This is an example.
