how to throw away old computer safely

I have been working on a Windows 8 computer for a while now, and my old XP laptop is no longer required. I'd like to take it to the refuse tip where I believe there is a recycling facility for such metal objects. Is there any quick and easy way I can delete or make unreadable the hard drive for the sake of security? (I no longer require any files, software or hardware on the laptop.)

Thanks in advance.

CCleaner have a Drive Wiper as part of the normal Free Download.

While I have not tried it myself, my experience of the other parts of CCleaner's Portfolio suggests that it will be very capable and is, of course, Free!

To be sure, I'd remove the hard drive and take a large hammer to it. the rest can go to the recycle.

Easy one this is remove hard drive get a case and hey presto you can after formatting it use it as a spare drive, the rest of it take to the tip where there will be a section for used electrical equipment.

Before you send it to the dump, consider donating it for refurbishment and supplying to third world countries.
