how to safely shut down if pc stops responding

In Windows98 I use to press CTLR ALT DELETE to stop a program running & safely shut windows down

or if computer froze I had a reset switch on pc that I just pressed & it would restart, scan for errors with scandisk & load windows

but I was wondering how to do this in Vista on a MedionE3300; do I still press CTRL ALT DELETE to close a program & if that doesnt work what would I do as I dont have a reset switch on this pc?

Holding the power button for 5/10 seconds usually turns the power off, on my system anyway then just turn it on again.

Yes, you can use Ctrl/Alt/Del on Vista - it will give you a menu of options one of which is Task Manager where you can end the non-responding program. Or right-click on the Taskbar and open task manager from there. If you are completely frozen then use gazzaho's solution.

if nothing works and you have to turn the power off at the plug remember to run chkdsk next time you use the pc.
