How to rid viruses?

A friend is currently unable to access the Internet. His computer has had 13 Trojans. He has managed to get rid of 12, however a virus still remains.

A book has the advice that reformatting his computer will not necessarily rid him of this virus. It will remain. What is your opinion? Would this be the best way to tackle this problem? His computer uses Windows XP. Hope I have made sense?

Thanks
Cara

Please make sure your freind uses a firewall to securer the computer.

My fave zonealarm can stop programme from being allowed to access the internet and can be useful.

Also as GANDALF <|:-)> recommends it may be a good idea to turn off system restore

Link for zone alarm:

Zone alarm is a free programme

Don't forget to turn system restore back on when his pc is clean.

Formatting his hard drive will wipe everything, including any virus which may be lurking there.

So, to clarify - formatting the hard drive will get rid of any viruses?

  cara 21:35 03 Nov 2004

Oh, and what effect does system restore have on all this?
