Bought a second hand computer for the kids. It has loads of porn on it. I can delete what I can find, jpegs mainly, but want to make sure none is left and that kids don't accidently access it.

Question:
Is there any software that will get rid of it all for me. I don't want to format because it has some really useful software.

Start - Search - Pictures Music or Video and tick Pictures.

Make sure there are no prying eyes as all pictures found will come up on screen.

How about installing a 2nd HDD and transfering the programs to that. Then reformat the original, and use the 2nd HDD for program files only.

Im sure someone on here will advise differently. IMHO I would reformat and start again.

What OS are you using and what is the pc spec??

Hope this helps in some way.

Good luck

Do a general house clean of the system, that is, clear all cookies and Internet files (from within Explorer), search for .bmp as well as .jpg and delete them all. You could try a regediting utility to search in the registry for anything pornographic click here for a try for free version.

If I were you I'd reformat. You really don't know what else is likely to be found on there by the sounds of it.

Porn aside, a new fresh start on a computer that is new to you is the best bet anyway.

Agree with the others. I would always re-format a 2nd-hand machine, no matter what it has been used for.

I also agree that the best way out is to reformat the disk and start again. The problem with this is that if you don't have any of the driver disks or the motherboard disk it will cause a lot of problems.

Can you give us the spec of this PC as it is now? and also what is the "really useful software" that is installed on it?

Could you balckmail the person you bought it off and use the proceeds for a new computer!!???

  smudge101 18:40 26 Nov 2004

Friday spelling, sorry, meant blackmail.

You could buy one of these, or with a bit more looking, maybe find a free or trial one!

I agree, the only guranteed method to remove traces of previous use from the PC, regardless of what they are, would be to re-fomat and re-install.

It will also give you a clean system, free of any possible malware etc, and also remove junk files left over from software previously uninstalled.

I am surprised that the previous owner left it all behind though.
